The Best of Both Worlds – Xpedo Milo Clipless Pedal

You want the power transfer of a clipless pedal and the confidence of a platform. The Xpedo Milo gives you exactly that. A single-sided SPD clipless mechanism sits at the heart of a wide, open aluminium cage — so you can clip in for maximum efficiency on the climbs, and ride unclipped on technical sections where you need your foot free in an instant.

Whether you’re a trail rider transitioning to clipless for the first time, a commuter who wants the option to clip in without being locked in, or an enduro rider who wants a platform they can trust when things get rowdy, the Milo is the pedal that adapts to your riding style. Sealed cartridge bearings, adjustable release tension, and a compact 101.5 x 72 x 27.4mm body make it a serious performer at a serious price point.

Key Features

  • Single-sided SPD clipless mechanism: Compatible with all standard SPD cleats (2-bolt). The single-sided design means the cleat mechanism is on one face of the pedal, while the other face acts as a flat platform — giving you the choice to clip in or ride flat depending on the terrain and your preference.
  • Wide aluminium cage: The open cage design provides a large, stable platform for your foot whether clipped in or not. The aluminium construction keeps weight low while providing excellent rigidity and durability on the trail.
  • Adjustable release tension: The cleat release tension is fully adjustable, allowing you to dial in exactly how much force is needed to unclip. Ideal for riders transitioning to clipless or those who prefer a lighter release in technical terrain.
  • Sealed cartridge bearings (DU bearings): Patronenlager / DU-Lagerung provides smooth, reliable rotation and excellent resistance to dirt, mud, and water ingress. Low maintenance and long-lasting.
  • XPC Cleat (6°) included: The Milo comes with Xpedo’s XPC cleat, which offers 6° of rotational float — enough movement to protect your knees without feeling loose or imprecise.
  • Compact dimensions: At 101.5 x 72 x 27.4mm, the Milo is compact enough to avoid rock strikes on technical terrain while still providing a generous platform area.
  • Q-Factor 51.5mm: A narrow Q-factor keeps your foot position close to the centreline of the bike for efficient pedalling and natural knee tracking.
  • Steel axle, 9/16" thread: Compatible with all standard adult cranks. The steel axle provides excellent durability and resistance to bending under load.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does “single-sided SPD” mean?

A single-sided SPD pedal has the clipless cleat mechanism on only one face of the pedal. The other face is a flat platform. This means you can choose to clip in (by engaging the cleat on the mechanism side) or ride flat (by using the platform side without clipping in). It’s the ideal design for riders who want the option of clipless efficiency without being committed to clipping in on every ride. Double-sided SPD pedals (like the Shimano PD-M520) have the mechanism on both sides, making it easier to clip in but removing the flat platform option.

Is the Xpedo Milo compatible with Shimano SPD cleats?

Yes. The Xpedo Milo uses a standard 2-bolt SPD-compatible cleat interface. It is compatible with Shimano SPD cleats (SM-SH51 single-release and SM-SH56 multi-release) as well as Xpedo’s own XPC cleat (included). It is not compatible with SPD-SL (road 3-bolt), Look Keo, or other road cleat systems.

What is the XPC cleat and how much float does it offer?

The XPC cleat is Xpedo’s own SPD-compatible cleat, included with the Milo. It offers 6° of rotational float — meaning your foot can rotate 6 degrees before releasing from the pedal. This float helps protect your knees by allowing natural foot movement during the pedal stroke. 6° is a moderate float, suitable for most riders. If you prefer zero float (fixed position) or more float, you can replace the XPC cleat with a compatible Shimano SPD cleat.

How do I adjust the release tension on the Xpedo Milo?

The release tension is adjusted using a small hex key (Allen key) on the tension adjustment screw located on the cleat mechanism. Turning the screw clockwise increases tension (harder to unclip), and anti-clockwise decreases tension (easier to unclip). Start with the lowest tension setting when first learning to use clipless pedals, and gradually increase as you become more comfortable with the clipping and unclipping motion.

What is the difference between the Milo and a standard flat platform pedal?

A flat platform pedal has no cleat mechanism — your foot sits on the platform and can be placed and removed freely at any time. The Xpedo Milo adds a SPD clipless mechanism on one side, allowing you to clip your cycling shoe into the pedal for a secure, efficient connection during the pedal stroke. When clipped in, you can apply power through the full 360° of the pedal stroke (pulling up as well as pushing down), improving efficiency and reducing fatigue on longer rides. The cage on the Milo also functions as a flat platform when not clipped in.

Do I need special shoes to use the Xpedo Milo?

Yes. To use the clipless function, you need cycling shoes with a 2-bolt SPD cleat mount on the sole. These are commonly called “MTB shoes” or “SPD shoes” and are available from brands including Shimano, Giro, Specialized, Five Ten, and many others. You can ride the Milo on the platform side with any shoe, but to clip in you need compatible SPD shoes. Road shoes with 3-bolt SPD-SL mounts are not compatible.

What is the Q-Factor and why does it matter?

The Q-Factor is the distance between the outer faces of the two pedal axles — essentially, how wide apart your feet are when pedalling. The Xpedo Milo has a Q-Factor of 51.5mm, which is relatively narrow. A narrower Q-Factor keeps your feet closer to the centreline of the bike, which generally improves pedalling efficiency and promotes more natural knee tracking. Riders with wider hips or knee issues may prefer a wider Q-Factor, while most trail and XC riders benefit from a narrower stance.

Are the bearings serviceable?

The Xpedo Milo uses sealed DU cartridge bearings. These are designed to be low-maintenance and highly resistant to contamination from mud, water, and trail debris. When the bearings eventually wear out, they can be replaced by pressing out the old cartridge and pressing in a new one — a job that can be done at home with basic tools or by a bike mechanic. Regular cleaning and occasional lubrication of the axle threads will extend bearing life significantly.
