An Insightful Conversation with Ilka Groenewold:
When did you embark on your cycling journey?
I truly started cycling on a serious level when I registered for my first Ironman in 2008. Before that, I dabbled in triathlons, but 2008 marked the beginning of my professional cycling journey.
What was your initial impression of Silverback?
What immediately caught my eye and captured my heart was the exquisite finish and elegant colors of Silverback bikes. My own bike is sleek and entirely black, which I absolutely adore.

How do you feel about cycling in general?
I believe there's nothing quite as invigorating and health-promoting as cycling. Unlike jogging, which can sometimes strain the knees and joints, cycling is gentle on the body and a fantastic way to stay active.
What do you love most about cycling?
For me, the greatest aspect of cycling is being outdoors in the fresh air. It's wonderful for my joints, and the best part is that I can slip into my cycling gear and ride straight from my doorstep into nature, without the need to drive to a specific location and change, as I would for swimming.
Do you prefer cycling alone or with friends?
I generally prefer cycling alone. Ironman events, for instance, don't allow group riding, so I've become accustomed to solo rides. Riding solo allows me to connect more deeply with nature.
What sports events have you participated in?
I love taking part in triathlon events in Hamburg and am gearing up for an Ironman in 2023.
Any advice for those looking to start cycling?
I recommend beginning with a professional bike fitting. Rather than jumping into cycling right away, it's crucial to receive expert guidance and learn the correct sitting posture. These are foundational steps before diving into the world of cycling.
Do you enjoy other sports too?
Swimming holds a special place in my heart, although I'm still an amateur in that domain. I'm yet to discover my passion for other sports that I haven't explored yet.
What has been your most challenging experience in sports competitions?
So far, the most demanding challenge has been a marathon event in Singapore. The sweltering heat, even though the event took place at night, made it almost unbearable. It was a tremendous test of my endurance.
What's the most picturesque place you've cycled in?
Surprisingly, it's right here in Hamburg, particularly along the scenic Deiche where I reside. The beauty of the surroundings makes it an incredible place for cycling.
Ilka Groenewold's cycling journey is not only inspiring but also a testament to the thrill of cycling. Her dedication to staying active, embracing new challenges, and appreciating the beauty of nature from the saddle is truly remarkable.
